Honoring James Joshua Priest’s Legacy

James Joshua Priest arrived in California during the Gold Rush of 1849, drawn by the allure of opportunity and adventure. By 1891, he established vineyards on what is now our Estate, cultivating Zinfandel and Chasselas grapes. His visionary leadership laid the groundwork for Priest Ranch—a symbol of agricultural innovation and resilience.

Today, we proudly continue to honor his legacy by crafting wines that celebrate the extraordinary potential of this land. Therefore, the 2019 James Joshua is our heartfelt tribute, blending the essence of Napa Valley with our unwavering commitment to excellence.

The Estate: A Tapestry of Diversity

Nestled in the eastern hills of Napa Valley, Somerston Estate—home to the storied Priest Ranch—spans 1,682 acres of rolling hills, with elevations ranging from 800 to 1,615 feet. This diverse landscape boasts a spectrum of microclimates and soil types, which allows us to cultivate an array of premium vineyards. Consequently, the unique conditions enrich our wines with complexity and character, and the 2019 James Joshua is no exception.

The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for this vintage were meticulously sourced from three premier blocks on the property, with each selected for their exceptional quality. As a result, the Estate’s natural variations in temperature, sun exposure, and soil composition create the ideal environment for crafting wines with depth and distinction.

The Wine: A Red Wine to Cherish

Our 2019 James Joshua is crafted exclusively from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, which embodies the pinnacle of Priest Ranch craftsmanship. After being handpicked and carefully sorted, the grapes were naturally fermented and aged for 26 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Ultimately, the result is a powerful yet approachable wine that is ready to be enjoyed now or cellared for years to come.

On the nose, it captivates with vibrant aromas of boysenberry, Bing cherry, and eucalyptus, which lead to a palate enriched with notes of vanilla bean, dark chocolate, fresh herbs, and a hint of espresso. Remarkably, this exceptional wine pairs beautifully with dishes like slow-roasted prime rib, elevating every bite with its rich, layered profile.
