Who we are

Discover our origins

Founded by James Joshua priest

Priest Ranch is a historic Napa Valley property established in 1869 by James Joshua Priest, a Gold Rush prospector.

At Priest Ranch, we are passionately dedicated to capturing the finest details in every aspect of our winemaking—from ground to glass. Initially established in 1869 by James Joshua Priest, a Gold Rush prospector, our historic Napa Valley property has a rich heritage that we honor with every bottle. Our modern journey began in 2007 with the inaugural vintages of our Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah, crafted by our Founding Winemaker and Co-Founder, Craig Becker. Today, Winemaker Cody Hurd and Director of Viticulture Jake Knobloch embraces the standards set forth by Becker and continues to utilize our property’s diverse landscape, skillfully blending grapes from multiple blocks to create unparalleled wines that honor the rich Napa Valley heritage. Each wine reflects the unique character of our meticulously farmed vineyards, considering factors like grape varietal, soil type, and elevation, ensuring the finest expression of our terroir. Celebrated for their adventurous and unique profiles, Priest Ranch wines are a testament to our commitment to exceptional quality and craftsmanship.

Today, our 1,682-acre estate is farmed with 230 acres of producing vineyards, in 15 distinct sites, encompassing over 180 different varietal blocks. Located high on the eastern hill of the Vaca Mountains above St. Helena, the estates’ varied range in elevations, exposures, soils, and microclimates allow us to create wines which showcase distinct expressions of its diverse terroir. At Somerston Estate we employ intentional and leadership-driven viticulture and viniculture practices, borne of the pioneering spirit of our agrarian heritage.  We subscribe to the challenge of cultivated excellence, seeking simplicity and preserved integrity at all times.
